Summer Safety Tips
(Post Date 08-10-2007)
The Dunklin Fire District wants citizens to consider the following safety ideas when participating in summer activities. Have a fun and safe summer!
1.) Please supervise all children near swimming pools. On a yearly average about 300 children under the age of 5 drown in residential swimming pools alone.
2.) Buckle up during commutes. Did you know that the chances of being killed in a crash are 1 in 31 WITHOUT a seatbelt, and 1 in 1300 WITH a seatbelt?
3.) Never ride alone. Whether you are riding a horse, ATV or bicycle always take someone with you and carry a first-aid kit and a communication device.
4.) Wear a bicycle helmet. On average 900 people are killed in the US in bicycle collisions yearly. Head injuries can be reduced by up to 85% with the use of a bicycle helmet.
5.) Don’t BBQ on wood decks! We see too many homes catch fire due to the resident Bar-B-Cueing on a wooden deck.
6.) Limit outdoor activity in direct sunlight. Wear light clothing, and consume a lot of water. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages when working in the heat.
7.) Don’t leave children or animals unattended in vehicles. Within minutes, the temperature can soar to a deadly temperature of over 140 degrees. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you observe an unattended child in a vehicle.
