Dunklin Fire responds to explosion/brush fire

(Post date 11-11-2007)

On 11-11-2007 at 2:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion in the 900 Block of Peggy Court in Pevely.

After canvassing the area, firefighters were able to locate a brush fire, in a heavily wooded area. Accessing the scene proved to be challenging for firefighters, who eventually had to utilize 4x4 fire trucks to gain access to the fire. Additional firefighters had to walk into the scene with firefighting hand tools.

Seven Dunklin Firefighters and two pieces of apparatus worked for approximately two and a half hours at the scene.

Two propane tanks, and a metal can (believed to previously contain camping fuel) were recovered from the scene. One propane tank exploded causing shrapnel to be launched from the fire. It is believed the fire spread due to the explosion emitting hot embers into the surrounding woods. The other propane tank had not ruptured. Numerous other small cans, similar to those of spray paint cans littered the area.

Pevely Police took custody of the propane tanks and is handling the investigation. No injuries were reported.
